This map illustrates probable standing flood
waters along the eastern bank of the Prut River in the Cahul and Vulcanesti
Districts of the Republic of Moldova, as well as the western bank of the
river in Romania. This flood analysis is based on Formosat-2 satellite
imagery recorded on 22 July 2010. Areas of potential / probable flooding
within towns and road / bridge obstacles have been identified and marked
in the overview and inset focus maps.
Overall the flooding appears to be relatively contained along this southern
section of the Prut River, with limited numbers of potentially flooded/flood-affected
buildings, primarily in the Republic of Moldova. Transport routes appear
to be moderately affected with a number of potential road flooding sites
along both sides of the Prut. There is suspected bridge damage along an
international border crossing west of the city of Cahul, Moldova. The two
international bridges linking Romania with the Moldovan city of Giurgiulesti
appear intact and fully operational.
Please note that areas likely flooded with dense vegetation cover have
been marked in the map with a lower level of confidence because of limitations
in water detection with the satellite imagery. Pre-flood water has been
taken from a European dataset derived from multiple sources and may not
accurately reflect the current location Prut River channel in some locations
in the map. This flood assessment is a preliminary analysis & has not
yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR
/ UNOSAT.
