Thousands of Banyumas residents demand relocation site

Agus Maryono , The Jakarta Post , Banyumas

Around 1,200 residents of the Cibangkong village of Banyumas have demanded local administration to provide them with a new relocation site since their current residential areas are very prone to landslides.

Kartono, one of the residents, said that he feared heavy rainfall might cause a landslide in the village.

"Land movement at Gandusari village has caused some parts of my home to crack," Kartono said.

Another resident Tarsiyah said that she could not sleep at night due to fear that a landslide might occur at any time.

Separately, member of the Banyumas administration's for disaster management Djunaedi, said that his office was facing financial difficulties in relocating the residents.

"Moving them to a new place costs us a lot of money. Besides, looking for a site which is suitable for them is not an easy task," Djunaedi said.

He added that his office and the Cibangkong Disaster Care Community have conducted a public campaign to prepare for any possible natural disasters.

" I dont think we need to relocate them now since the areas can still be safe based on research by the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG)," he said.
