Heavy rains being experienced in most parts of the country has triggered flooding and landslides which have resulted in loss of human and livestock lives, displacement of households, and destruction of houses and farmlands. The floods have also had negatively impacted on water and sanitation and health of affected population since the households are exposed to contaminated water, lack basic sanitation facilities and are congested in camps. So far, 7 deaths have been reported and 1,100 HH are displaced and are in camps.
In Tana River, some parts of Tarasaa Division have been cut off. Evacuation in Ongonya village is ongoing by the KRCS team and boat. There is flooding in Garsen town, Minjila and Isowe which has led to the inaccessibility of the Garsen-Hola. As a result, 17 houses have been submerged in Garsen sub-location, Bilisa location, and Bora Imani village jua kali area. In Hola,Waldera, Ifir and parts of Wayu are not accessible, among other areas.
Seasonal rivers are causing damage downstream, cutting off roads and making some areas inaccessible. The Kanagoni Bridge is still cut off with two boats from KRCS bring the only source of transport across the bridge. Ministry of Roads has started repairs on the road.
Flood victims at Kurawa Primary are expected to be moved today to an alternative camping site provided well wishers. This is to allow pupils at the school to resume with studies. So far, at 577 HH have sought refuge in 4camps: Kurawa Primary School (215), Kadzuyuni Nursery School (161), Musamarini Primary School (85) and Kanagoni Dispensary (116).
Other HH that have been displaced include: 4 HH displaced and 55 other HH affected in Bora Imani in Ramada Sub location, Adu location, where increased water levels in the seasonal river (Mto wa Mbono) resulted in flooding. Some other 7 HH have been displaced in Kazandani where 6 goats drowned in Kazandani, while 2 cows drowned in Adu Location. At least 5 HH were also displaced in Ramada village, Ramada sub location and are camping at the Chief's camp, while some other 33 affected households are in Majengo (20) and Sorogosa Mairobi (13) in Fundisa Location in Magarini division camp. This brings the number of displaced households in Malindi to 593 with a total of at least 681 affected. Chamari area in Marafa division is cut off as the river has flooded with reported cases of livestock drowning in Kadzandani and Adu areas. Crops have also been washed away.
And in Murang'a, about 67 families were evacuated by the KRCs personnel and moved to Kathaithe Shopping Centre after landslides were reported in Mariaini village in Gathaithi location, Kahuro Division, Muranga District, killing a 13 year old girl. The area District Commissioner, Mr Natembea said 6 houses in Murarandia were in immediate danger while 200 other families along river Maragua needed to be evacuated urgently, before heavy rains result in more damage. The landslide occurred at around 6.30 after a night of heavy rainfall. The KRCS response team is conducting an assessment of the area and distributing non food items such as nets, blankets, and other domestic use equipment. KRCS is also involved in mobilizing members of the affected community to evacuate houses and go for registration at the Chief's camp, before being moved to higher ground.
