Singapore Red Cross launches public appeals for survivors of Padang earthquake and Typhoon Ketsana

Singapore, 5 October 2009 - The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has launched two month-long public appeals for survivors of Typhoon Ketsana in Indochina and the Padang earthquake in Indonesia respectively.

This comes on the back of the Philippines Tropical Storm appeal, which was launched just four days earlier.

The Indochinese appeal, titled the "Typhoon Ketsana Flood", will collect donations for survivors of Typhoon Ketsana - specifically for those in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The Padang earthquake appeal, titled "Padang Earthquake", will collect donations for the survivors of the Padang earthquake.

a) Typhoon Ketsana Appeal

The Singapore government has contributed US$50,000 to kick-start SRC's Typhoon Ketsana Flood appeal. This appeal begins on 5 October for a month, ending on 30 October, and the donations will be used for the survivors of the floods in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.

SRC's sister national societies in the three countries are working on relief in the affected areas. Volunteers based in those areas are assessing the damage by the floods, as well as rescuing stranded survivors and providing the necessary relief.

The money raised from the appeals will be channeled to our Red Cross counterparts in these three countries for their humanitarian relief efforts.

b) Padang Earthquake Appeal

The SRC is working closely with the Indonesian Red Cross, also known as Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI), to assess the requirements of the survivors at this critical relief phase. SRC has donated S$50,000 and medical supplies to the Indonesian Red Cross. The donations will be used to purchase medical supplies locally. SRC is ready to send 100 stretchers and flexible splints, the latter which is used to support fractures.

The appeal begins on 5 October for a month, ending on 30 October.

c) Monetary Donations

The SRC is accepting cash and cheque donations from members of the public. They can donate in person at the Red Cross House or by sending a cheque.
