OCHA Somalia Humanitarian Access Update, 01 - 30 Jun 2009

 Full_Report (pdf* format - 393 Kbytes)

MAIN ISSUES DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD

The security situation throughout South Central Somalia continued to deteriorate during the reporting period due to heavy fighting particularly in Mogadishu, resulting in significant displacement and civilian deaths.

- Approximately 114,000 people were displaced in June throughout Somalia, out of which roughly 103,000 people were displaced due to insecurity in Mogadishu.

- The number of war-wounded is exceedingly high with 1,051 admitted to the main surgical hospitals in Mogadishu in June 2009, bringing the total number of war wounded admitted to these two facilities this year to 2,625. The true scale of civilian loss is not known due to the lack of official records and the lack of access to key areas of conflict.

KEY CONSTRAINTS ON ACCESS

OCHA - Somalia and its partners monitor the following categories of access issues:

1. Military operations and ongoing activities impeding humanitarian interventions

The security situation in and around Mogadishu has deteriorated significantly since May, and continued to do so in June 2009.

- 03 June, fighting between TFG forces and insurgents took place in the vicinity of Yaaqshiid police station, Juunga, Fagah, Jamhuurya, Yaaqshiid, and Karaan districts in Mogadishu. As a result, approximately 10 people were killed and 67, mostly civilians, were wounded.

- 17 June, heavy fighting occurred between TFG forces and insurgents at Marino, Kawaan Bari, Karaan district in Mogadishu. It is estimated that more than 15 people were killed and more than 32, mostly civilians, were wounded.

- 19 June, heavy fighting was reported between TFG forces and insurgents at Shibis and Karaan districts in Mogadishu. Both sides exchanged heavy and light weapon's fire. As a result, 17 people were killed and approximately 60, mostly civilians, were wounded.

Although it is difficult to provide a comprehensive picture on the impact of the ongoing hostilities on humanitarian response, an example is illustrated below:

The 16 sites where wet feeding is provided to the most vulnerable have been closed since 20 June due to increasing insecurity. This results in roughly 80,000 beneficiaries not having access to a daily meal.
