Somalia: Clashes in Mogadishu, victims among civilians

There has been heavy fighting between the transition government, the African Union peacekeepers (Amisom) and armed guerrillas northern Mogadishu. Local sources said that the fighting, which resumed with impetus after a few weeks of ceasefire, in the Abdul Aziz, Shibis, Hodan and Daynile quarters, has left a dozen killed and many wounded especially among the civilian population. As for the dynamics, there are contrasting opinions. The anti government movement Hizb-ul Islam accuses the military of having attacked one of its positions in Mogadishu, while the spokesman for the Somali armed forces, Aden Mohammed Kalmoy, said that the clashes originated frm an aggression at the expense of a reconnaissance patrol. 'Radio Shabelle' said the most violent fighting took place the Kulliyadda Jalle Si'ad palace used as the headquarters of the Burundian AMISOM peacekeeping contingent. Witnesses said that they heard mortar fire, coming from populated areas that prompted many families to flee. [AB]
