YANGON, Nov 17, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The European Union and other international donors will provide 100 million U.S. dollars' cash aid to Myanmar for carrying out vocational training and food security projects across the country, sources with the Myanmar Non- Governmental Organizations Network (MNN) said on Tuesday.
The cash aid will be used in one-year rehabilitation and resettlement project in cyclone-hit regions by MNN and other international NGOs as the first phase and then be used in development work in Rakhine, Chin, Shan and Kachin states and other dry zones in the country, the sources said.
The MNN was established in 2008 which comprises 52 domestic NGO.
Meanwhile, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office ( ECHO) provided an aid of 54.5 million U.S. dollars to Myanmar last year for running humanitarian and food programs in cyclone- hit areas in the country, earlier report said.
The fund for 2008 was up 105 percent compared with that for 2007 which amounted to 26.5 million dollars.
EU have been providing Myanmar with humanitarian assistance since 1994.
Deadly tropical cyclone Nargis hit five divisions and states - Ayeyawaddy, Yangon, Bago, Mon and Kayin on May 2 and 3 last year, of which Ayeyawaddy and Yangon inflicted the heaviest casualties and massive infrastructural damage.
The storm has killed 84,537 people, leaving 53,836 missing and 19,359 injured according to official death toll.
