UNTAET Daily Briefing 18 Sep 2000

Dili, 18 September 2000
SRSG MEETS INDONESIAN ATHORITIES, U.S. DEFENCE SECRETARY

SRSG Sergio Vieira de Mello today received assurances from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political, Social and Security Affairs that a concrete plan to disarm the militias and improve the security situation in West Timor is being drawn up.

After the meeting in Jakarta, described as more positive than the talks between East Timor and Indonesia in Denpasar on 14 September, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono traveled to New York to discuss the issue with United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the Security Council.

Sergio Vieira de Mello and U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen exchanged views on the situation in West Timor in a meeting yesterday.

Cohen visited Jakarta to discuss the situation in West Timor with Indonesian President Abdurrachman Wahid and other Government members.

Before leaving Jakarta for Dili today, SRSG met with Indonesian Attorney-General Marzuki Darusman to follow-up the on going Indonesian investigation into serious crimes committed in East Timor last year.
