Landmine Action (in process of changing its name to Action on Armed Violence) is a UK-based non-governmental organisation working to reduce the incidence and impact of armed violence. Our work includes research, policy development and advocacy, and field-based programmes. Our research and policy work currently focuses on the issues of armed violence and development, the humanitarian impact of explosive weapons, including IEDs, cluster munitions and landmines. We are looking for a dynamic and experienced individual to fill the role of Researcher. Based in our offices in central London, the individual will work under the Policy and Research Manager on ongoing, long-term research projects.
This is an exciting opportunity for the right individual to develop his or her role in policy and research work within the fields of humanitarian disarmament, development and related international law. Salary will be in the range of £25-30k per annum.

Purpose of the job: To implement research projects
Main Responsibilities
- To implement on-going, long-term research and advocacy projects on explosive violence monitoring and landmine and cluster munitions monitoring research under the supervision of the Policy & Research Manager.
- Undertake research work including data gathering on incidences of the use and impact of explosive weapons; including the production of case studies on how explosive violence affects individuals and communities; assisting with preparing materials for outreach and advocacy with international organizations and civil society on these issues; and primary research to assist in the development of country specific reports on the implementation of the Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions.
- Conducting primary research, maintaining detailed records of sources, contributing to and maintaining research databases, assisting with conducting interviews and/or field research if necessary, drafting material for publication, and administrative tasks as required.
Person Specification
Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following experience/skills:
- University level degree, masters or advanced research qualifications.
- Native English speaker or fully fluent. Excellent academic writing skills in English.
- Excellent research skills. Demonstrated ability to produce quality research independently, from start to finish, with knowledge of research design and methodology, case study selection, and appropriate reference styles.
- Excellent organizational skills and previous experience in an office environment.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Flexibility to handle multiple streams of work, to take initiative where needed and assist in a variety of tasks as necessary.
- Ability to work well in a small team.
- Familiarity with and interest in international disarmament, development, humanitarian law, armed violence, explosive weapons, protection of civilians, humanitarian assistance and related fields.
- Familiarity with and interest in issues relating to IEDs, landmines, cluster munitions, and explosive remnants of war.
- Valid UK work permit.
Desirable
- Advanced knowledge of Excel and/or electronic database software.
- Familiarity with internet databases such as Factiva, Lexis-Nexis etc.
- Previous experience working with non-governmental or international organizations.
- Familiarity with the Landmine Monitor, Mine Ban Treaty and Convention on Cluster Munitions.
- Previous experience with media work, in print or electronically.
- Proficiency in French or additional languages.
- Web and basic software skills.
