At MAG (Mines Advisory Group), we deliver practical and positive solutions that assist the process of peace and stability in both conflict and former conflict countries. During the past 15 years we have safely found, removed and destroyed millions of landmines, small and large bombs, missiles and other tools of armed conflict. By freeing up millions of acres of land we are the precursor to the development and economic growth of conflict-affected countries throughout the Middle East, South East Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.
Having worked in the country between 2004 and 2007, MAG restarted operations in Chad in May 2008, with a new project aimed at clearing landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and abandoned ordnance (AO) contamination in central, eastern and southern parts of the country. This contamination mainly originates from fighting in recent years between the Chad National Army and various rebel groups. The project was completed in 2009.
MAG is currently preparing to reestablish operations in Chad, and is therefore seeking a Technical Operations Manager in preparation for operations restarting.
As the senior technical representative in country, you will lead, oversee and safely manage all aspects of mine clearance and EOD operations, as well as manage the team of international staff. Working closely with the Project Manager, you will provide technical input into proposals and reports, liaise with donors and the UN and continue to build good relationships with government agencies, such as Chad National Demining Centre. As a member of the Project Senior Management Team you will need to be able to think strategically and make operational recommendations to enable MAG’s work in a complex context.
The post holder will be managing projects and staff across geographically diverse sites and therefore need to be strong team player with excellent management skills. A patient, tactful and diplomatic approach will be required in this challenging environment. The scale of the country and division of sites make for a diverse range of operating environments and a number of management challenges.
The postholder will be required to spend most of their time in N’djamena in order to liaise with official stakeholders, however there will also be a significant amount of time spent travelling to field locations. Regional experience would be a distinct advantage. Fluency in French and English is essential for this role.
Appointment to this position will be subject to MAG receiving a signed donor contract.
