(CLOSED) Project Manager

Mines Advisory Group (MAG)
Mines Advisory Group
Closing date: 31 Jan 2010 -- (CLOSED)
Location: Chad

Fixed Term – 12 months
£26,586 - £29,052 per annum (plus £2,000 per annum hardship allowance, accommodation, per diem, insurance and flights)

At MAG (Mines Advisory Group), we deliver practical and positive solutions that assist the process of peace and stability in both conflict and former conflict countries. During the past 15 years we have safely found, removed and destroyed millions of landmines, small and large bombs, missiles and other tools of armed conflict. By freeing up millions of acres of land we are the precursor to the development and economic growth of conflict-affected countries throughout the Middle East, South East Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.

Having worked in the country between 2004 and 2007, MAG restarted operations in Chad in May 2008, with a new project aimed at clearing landmines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and abandoned ordnance (AO) contamination in central, eastern and southern parts of the country. This contamination mainly originates from fighting in recent years between the Chad National Army and various rebel groups. The project was completed in 2009.

MAG is currently preparing to reestablish operations in Chad, and is therefore seeking a Project Manager in preparation for operations restarting.

Reporting to the HQ Head of Operations, the postholder will be responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of the project and be responsible for ensuring that project objectives are met. You will provide effective leadership and management to implement plans aimed at maximizing MAG’s effectiveness in terms of responding to the mine / UXO problem in Chad. As the manager of a small team of expatriate staff, you will be responsible for new project development, implementation and management, grant and budget management, supporting and capacity building national staff, overseeing logistical requirements and liaising with new and existing donors, government agencies, UN coordinating bodies and international and national NGOs. You will contribute to in-country strategic and business planning and constantly be seeking opportunities to develop and improve MAG’s work.

You will need experience of working overseas in international aid or development in a similar role including expertise in programme and project design, development, management, monitoring and evaluation. You will also need experience of managing a team and managing finances. You should be able to demonstrate an ability to work independently and be managed from a distance. You will need to be able to demonstrate an awareness of personal security and cultural sensitivities and a diplomatic manner. Regional experience would be a distinct advantage. Fluency in French and English is essential for this role.

Appointment to this position will be subject to MAG receiving a signed donor contract.
