Bangkok, Thailand – Assigned to the CDC Global Disease Detection Program, the VMO will provide veterinary expertise to help strengthen capacity in detecting and responding to zoonotic diseases and enhance partnerships between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health. Activities will focus in the following areas: surveillance, research, outbreak response and preparedness, training and capacity building, and networking. Anticipated appointment date is Spring 2010.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is placing veterinarians with knowledge and experience in both zoonotic medicine and human public health, in strategic international locations to provide scientific and technical expertise on public health issues related to zoonotic diseases at the interface between humans and animals. Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO) will function as recognized consultants on zoonotic disease surveillance and epidemiology, the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases, and the integration between veterinary medicine and public health research and practice.
Job Summary
Working collaboratively with country partners and international human and animal health organizations, the VMO will provide technical assistance for outbreak investigations, expansion of laboratory and epidemiologic capacity, control strategies, and intervention studies and programs to ensure public health safety and security. Other responsibilities may include: 1) conducting integrated surveillance for disease in animals and people; 2) conducting research regarding risk factors for transmission of disease between animals and humans; and 3) developing and conducting trainings and workshops for animal and human health care professionals.
These positions are two-year term appointments. The appointment may be extended based on the needs of the agency without further competition.
Depending on the candidate’s qualification, these positions may be filled at the GS 13, 14, or 15 level.
Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree. Knowledge and experience in epidemiology and public health concepts, principles, practices, methods and techniques is required.
Medical clearances are required for the assignee and all family members before being posted overseas. Inability to secure medical clearances will result in termination of appointment.
