Veterinary Medical Officer

Job Summary

Working collaboratively with country partners and international human and animal health organizations, the VMO will provide technical assistance for outbreak investigations, expansion of laboratory and epidemiologic capacity, control strategies, and intervention studies and programs to ensure public health safety and security. Other responsibilities may include: 1) conducting integrated surveillance for disease in animals and people; 2) conducting research regarding risk factors for transmission of disease between animals and humans; and 3) developing and conducting trainings and workshops for animal and human health care professionals.

Nairobi, Kenya – Assigned to the CDC Global Disease Detection Program, the VMO will provide veterinary expertise to help strengthen capacity in detecting and responding to zoonotic diseases and enhance partnerships between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Health. Activities will focus on five core activity areas: population-based surveillance, technical support for outbreaks, epidemiological research, training, and integration of laboratory and epidemiology programs into larger, international networks. Anticipated appointment date is Spring 2010.
