(CLOSED) Women’s Rights Advocacy Adviser

Placement until the end of December 2010.

Due to the nature of the partner organisation and the cultural context, for this placement we can only consider female applicants.

The Progressio development worker (DW) will work alongside the women’s network NAGAAD, supporting both NAGAAD’s staff and the partner organisations that make up the network, to promote women’s rights in general and in particular their capacities in civic dialogue, human rights and active citizenship and participation in decision-making bodies at the local council, parliamentary and executive cabinet level.

The post holder should have a degree level qualification or equivalent diploma in a relevant discipline.

You will have a minimum of three years’ work experience within the NGO sector, and on women’s rights and advocacy. You should have proven experience of designing, implementing and monitoring advocacy programmes/initiatives; of capacity building within the NGO/CBO (capacity building organisations) sector; in training/facilitation methodologies and direct training ability, and in campaigning, community mobilisation and networking.

Understanding the role which NGOs play in national and local development through advocacy; skills in gender policy development, research and commitment to awareness; knowledge/understanding of one or more areas linked to women’s rights, leadership and political participation; understanding the importance of good networking and information strategies, and skills in participatory monitoring and evaluation methods are essential. You should also have excellent research and analytical skills, including the ability to translate complex (and potentially sensitive) ideas/issues into briefings and presentations for diverse audiences; excellent interpersonal, communication and networking skills, including the ability to communicate and work with a wide range of people in a participatory, respectful, collaborative manner, and to enhance effective work relationships; maturity and sound political judgement; good problem solving skills; excellent report writing skills, and the ability to plan and implement own work.

Willingness to undertake road travel in Somaliland; cultural sensitivity in an Islamic/Somali environment, and willingness/ability to learn the basics of the Somali language are also essential.
