Context

MdM UK is looking for a consultant to undertake an Exploratory Mission for a Disaster Risk Reduction project in the Grande Anse area of Haiti.

Mission purpose

The purpose of the exploratory mission is to examine the situation in Grande Anse, assess the needs of the local communities, identify activities which best meet their needs, and potential partners with whom to undertake them.

Specific tasks

a) Analyzing the context- information gathering in Grande Anse regarding disaster mitigation activities, national capacity of the health structures, potential partners, community networks available, security context;

b) Identifying principle activities;

c) Assessing practical issues in the implementation: recruitment, venue, warehousing, communication, transportation;

d) Reporting: draft exploratory mission report and concept paper for proposed project .

Work Specification

Essential
  • Excellent communication and diplomatic skills
  • Excellent French
  • Relevant humanitarian field experience, preferably in difficult or insecure setting
  • Experience in project planning and/or implementation
  • Demonstrated competence in conducting qualitative research
  • Good reporting abilities

Desirable
  • Experience working in Haiti
  • Experience working in Disaster Risk Reduction
  • Experience conducting Exploratory Missions
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Participatory Learning and Action techniques
  • Knowledge of the health sector in international humanitarian and development work

Duration: 2-3 weeks
Start date: January 2010
Salary: All travel and accommodation expenses covered, in addition to per diem payment of £50.
