(CLOSED) Public Health Coordinator

Closing date: 16 Nov 2009 -- (CLOSED)
Location: Chad - Goz Beida

INT3448

Public Health Coordinator - 12 month fixed term contract (Oxfam GB)
Goz Beida, Chad
£21,990-£28,821 net per annum

With over 280,000 refugees and 170,000 IDPs residing in Eastern Chad, Oxfam has been carrying out emergency response work in the region since 2004, with a clear focus on the provision of water, sanitation, and public health services. With the situation becoming increasingly complex with displaced populations moving during the agricultural season and the need for assistance to an ever wider group of civilians, Oxfam’s continuous presence is incredibly important. As a Public Health Coordinator based in Goz Beida, working and living side-by-side with refugees, IDPs and conflict affected communities you’ll be in the best place to see the effect of your work.

Be challenged
You’ll be providing technical support to Oxfam GB’s humanitarian response to conflict affected populations in the Dar Sila region of Eastern Chad, ensuring that all communities have access to clean water, appropriate sanitation facilities under pinned by a robust community based PHP programme. We’ll look to you to contribute to and influence operational planning as well as play a large part in influencing the development of strategy. It’s a challenging task, but one you will thrive in.

Be involved
We’ll be looking to you for a good technical knowledge of water, sanitation and hygiene based on extensive practical experience of community health in developing countries. Your confidences when it comes to working with local partner agencies, communities and UN agencies will be paramount to ensuring efforts are efficiently and effectively organized and co-ordinated within a limited timeframe. You need to have a good understanding of international health, development and relief issues and of community mobilisation, especially when it comes to water and sanitation initiatives. It’s also important that you can integrate gender and diversity issues into public health promotion. Beyond that, you’ll need to bring in excellent assessment, analytical and planning skills, a diplomatic approach and the ability to train, manage and communicate with others. Fluency in French with some English is required and you should be happy to travel at short notice in what can be difficult circumstances.

Be Oxfam
A simple, inescapable truth underlines everything we do at Oxfam. There’s enough wealth in this world to go around. It’s not unfortunate that people live in poverty. It’s unjustifiable. It’s not their problem. It’s ours too. And with the right support, we can stop poverty and suffering in their tracks. More than 8,000 people already commit their time and talents to our humanitarian and long-term development projects. Now we’re looking for yours.
