(CLOSED) Youth Rights Advocacy Adviser

Location: Somalia - Hageisa, Somaliland

Two-year placement

The Progressio development worker (DW) working as a Youth Rights Advocacy Adviser will work alongside a local umbrella organisation - the Somaliland National Youth Organisation (SONYO) - supporting both SONYO staff and the partner organisations that make up the umbrella, to promote youth rights in general and in particular increased youth political participation and civic education, and to collaborate with other local organisations involved in a Progressio Non-state Actors (NSA) project.

You will have a degree level qualification or equivalent diploma in a relevant discipline.

A minimum of three years’ work experience within the NGO sector; and on child/juvenile/youth rights and advocacy; proven experience of designing, implementing and monitoring advocacy programmes/initiatives; of capacity building and organisational development within the NGO sector; in training/facilitation methodologies, including direct training/coaching experience, and in campaigning, community mobilisation, civic education and networking are essential.

You should have a genuine interest in working with youth and in understanding their strategic role/contributions to the construction of a democratic and participative society; understanding of the role which NGOs play in national and local development through advocacy; skills in policy development and research; and in participatory monitoring and evaluation methods. Knowledge and understanding of one or more areas linked to youth rights, leadership and political participation; understanding of gender issues and commitment to mainstreaming gender; strong initiative, self motivation and drive for innovation and excellence are essential. Excellent team building, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate/work with a wide range of people in a participatory, respectful, collaborative manner, and enhance effective working relationships; excellent presentation skills including the ability to tailor communications to different audiences; excellent time-management and organisational skills required to plan and implement own work, and to meet deadlines; flexibility and the ability to live and work effectively in a resource poor environment, with limited leisure facilities are also essential.

You should also have good report writing skills and good command of English (both spoken and written); be willing to undertake road travel in Somaliland; be culturally sensitive in an Islamic/Somali environment, and be willing to learn the basics of the Somali language.

Experience of working with networks/umbrella organisations; of working effectively in a resource poor environment, previous experience in the Somali context; of working with/involving the media on youth and advocacy issues; understanding of the issues facing a post conflict society; good knowledge of international human rights standards and instruments, and skills in fundraising, including proposal development and reporting back to funders are also highly desirable
