(CLOSED) Programme Director

Closing date: 12 Jun 2003 -- (CLOSED)
Location: Lao People's Democratic Republic - Vientiane

Imagine a world where every child is safe, well-fed, educated and happy. Imagine being part of making that dream a reality by using your skills to make a difference to children's lives.

Programme Director, Laos
Based in Vientiane - £26,671 pa
Accompanied status - 25 month contract
Required from September 2003.

The programme in Laos consists of two main sectors: 'Youth at Risk' and Education. The Education programme includes an established Inclusive Education Project, which aims to include disabled children into the mainstream education system, and a newly developed Early Learning in Primary Schools project, mainly in poor areas with ethnic diversity. The 'Youth at Risk' programme includes projects in Juvenile Justice, a Centre for Youth Health and Development in Vientiane, and a new Cross-border Anti-Trafficking project. In 2003/4 there is also follow-up to a groundbreaking research into 'Listening to the Voice of Young People'. We work in partnership with government or mass organisations.

As part of a global realignment of country programmes, in July 2001 Save the Children UK made the decision that the Laos country programme should close its office by the end of 2005, handing over some of the projects to Save the Children Alliance partners, and phasing out of others. We will, however, continue some core funding until 2006, aiming to retain some technical engagement beyond that, through partners, and linked to our regional office in Bangkok and headquarters. We are now seeking a Programme Director to play a key role in taking forward this exciting yet challenging transition.

You should have excellent communication and negotiation skills and proven experience in managing change, in addition to a solid grounding in programming, ideally related to children and young people. Staff management, report writing, financial management and strategic planning skills are also essential, and knowledge of Laos would be an advantage.

Closing date for receipt of completed applications: Thursday 12th June 2003.

Interviews will be held on: Monday 14th July 2003.
