Tropical Cyclone Giri - Oct 2010

Disaster description

On 22 Oct 2010, Cyclone Giri made landfall as a category 4 cyclone in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State, close to the town of Kyaukpyu. The Townships of Kyaukpyu, Myebon, Minbya and Pauktaw were the most severely affected by the storm, which caused damage to houses and infrastructure including roads and bridges in coastal areas. The Government reported that at least 45 people were dead or missing, while 101,923 people remained homeless and at least 20,380 houses were destroyed, with a total of at least 260,000 people (52,000 households) affected.
