Thailand: Floods and Landslides - March 2011

Disaster description

In March 2011, an active low pressure cell caused intense rainfall over the Southern Region of Thailand, resulting in unprecedented flash floods in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Patthalung, Narathiwat, Yala, Trang, Phang Nga, Krabi and Satun. Landslides and mudslides were also reported in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Trang and Krabi (Govt, 10 Oct 2011). As of 31 March, 20 people were reported dead and approximately 842,324 people were affected by the disaster (OCHA, 31 Mar 2011). Between 24 March to 4 April, the Thai Red Cross responded to the disaster with 21,006 relief bags, 238,800 bottles of drinking water, 18,045 prepared meals and evacuation assistance. The total value of the operation was 22,735,350 Baht (Thai Red Cross, 4 Apr 2011). In mid-April, the Thai Prime Minister announced that the floods had subsided, with only a few areas around Tapi River remaining inundated. (Govt, 17 Apr 2011)
