Malaysia : Floods - Jan 2011

Disaster description

In January 2011, heavy rainfall caused three of the main rivers in Johor - Sungai Muar, Sungai Benut and Sungai Mengkibol - to burst their banks, triggering flooding throughout the region. The four worst affected areas were Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang and Muar (MERCY Malaysia, 18 Jun 2012). More than 24,000 people were forced to seek refuge in 71 relief centres, and the IFRC reported that four adults and one child died as a result of the flooding (IFRC, 10 Feb 2011). MERCY Malaysia responded with a RM 218,000 deployment between 2 and 8 February, focusing on Pagoh and Segamat. A total of 1,850 hygiene kits, 70 blankets and floor mats, and 149 medical treatments were provided to the affected population. (MERCY Malaysia, 18 Jun 2012)
