Sri Lanka: Flash Floods - Nov 2009

Disaster description

Thousands of people in eastern Sri Lanka were marooned by flash floods. Pradeep Kodippily, the national coordinator of the Disaster Managament Center reported that 28,640 families in the Batticaloa and Ampara districts were affected. The two districts suffered continuous torrential rains, with more than 100 milimeters of rains recorded in Ampara. (Xinhua, 11 Dec 2009)

The National Disaster Management Center set up several camps in Batticaloa to provide shelter for the victims as about 50,000 families were affected by the floods in the Eastern Province as of 16 December. (Govt. of Sri Lanka, 16 Dec 2009)
