Indonesia: Floods and Landslides in Central Java and East Java Provinces OCHA Situation Report No. 3

This situation report was compiled by the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator / Humanitarian Coordinator (UN RC/HC) in Indonesia, based on information provided by the National Coordination Board for Disaster Management (BAKORNAS PB), the Provincial Coordination Units for Disaster Management (SATKORLAK PB) of Central and East Java Provinces, District Coordination Units for Disaster Management (SATLAK PB), the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG), the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia

  • PMI), UN Agencies, international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and media reports.

I. SITUATION

1. Seasonal torrential rains caused overflowing rivers, flooding and landsides in the Provinces of Central and East Java, since 25 December. The Government of Indonesia's (GoI) National Coordination Board for Disaster Management, BAKORNAS PB, report at least 93 deaths and 34 people missing as a result of the recent floods and landslides in Java.

2. BAKORNAS PB reported the following casualties and damages caused by the floods: (see table in attached document)

3. As of 2 January, 32 people had been admitted to hospitals and 24,893 outpatients were treated due to floods and landslides in the Central Java Province. In the East Java Province, 15 people were admitted to hospitals and there were 361,098 outpatients, according to the Department of Health.

4. The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) forecast a high probability of further heavy rainfall in East and Central Java from mid January to early February. BMG also forecast heavy rains during January and February in the capital city of Jakarta, where an estimated 2,000 people were recently affected by floods, according to BAKORNAS PB.

II. NATIONAL RESPONSES

1. SATLAK PB in each of the affected districts and cities continue to coordinate and deliver assistance. Government offices at the national level, such as BAKORNAS PB, the Department of Health and the Department of Social Affairs, provided supplementary assistance. As of 2 January, the Department of Health Crisis Centre has delivered four rubber boats, 20 tonnes of supplementary food, 15 tonnes of ready-to-eat meals, medicines and other health supplies to Central Java Province. The Centre also delivered three rubber boats and 20 tonnes of supplementary food to East Java Province

2. The search and rescue efforts in Karanganyar District in Central Java are ongoing and will continue until 5 January. The relief activities were jointly conducted by the National Agency for Search and Rescue (BASARNAS), the District Unit for Civilian Protection (Kesbanglinmas), Military (TNI), Police, PMI, local Search and Rescue organizations and local communities.
