Palestinian killed by unexploded Israeli ordnance in south Lebanon

Beirut_(dpa) _ A Palestinian man was killed in southern Lebanon Tuesday when he tried to defuse an unexploded Israeli bomb, police said.

According to the police, 30-year-old Palestinian refugee Ahmed Houeidi was trying to cut the tip off an unexploded Israeli bomb to use the metal when it blew up in his hands killing him instantly.

Houeidi was a Palestinian refugee living in a camp near the southern port city of Tyre, the police said.

Police said the bomb was a result of munitions dropped by the Israeli air force over Lebanon its July 2006 war against the Hezbollah movement.

The police said around 800,000 cluster bomblets were dropped over Lebanon, some 40 per cent of which failed to explode on impact.

Since the UN-sponsored ceasefire on August 14, 2006, unexploded ordnance has killed at least 27 people and wounded more than 146. dpa wh mga
