Rep. Korea: 3.5 trillion won aid for flood-hit areas

The government has set aside 3.5 trillion won for restoration works in regions hit by Typhoon Ewiniar and heavy rains last month.

The aid is comprised of 2.6 trillion won from the state treasury and 838.4 billion won from provincial governments' coffer.

By region, Gangweon Province will receive the largest amount of 2.3 trillion won, followed by South Gyeongsang Province with 517 billion won, North Chungcheong Province with 198.3 billion won, Gyeonggi Province with 150.7 billion won, North Gyeongsang Province with 109.2 billion won, South Chungcheong Province with 100.7 billion won and South Jeolla Province with 84.3 billion won.

An additional budget of 803.5 billion won was set for the 39 cities and counties, which were declared special disaster zones on Aug. 10.

The central government and local authorities plan to finish the restoration work in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province by the end of this year as an on-the-spot inspection team of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is scheduled to conduct an on-the-spot inspection in the area next February.

The government and Gangwon Province are joining hands to rebuild damaged facilities for winter sports in Pyeongchang, which is trying to bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

On June 22, the IOC executive board in Lausanne, Switzerland, accepted Pyeongchang, the Russian city of Sochi, and the Austrian city of Salzburg as candidate cities to host the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.
