Minister Koenders gives half million euros in emergency aid to Peru

Development minister Bert Koenders is giving a half million euros to Peru to aid victims of the earthquake that struck the country on 15 August.

Initial estimates are that over 500 people died in the earthquake, over 1000 people were injured and more than 35,000 homes were destroyed. Minister Koenders is contributing a half million euros through the Dutch Red Cross to joint relief efforts by the Peruvian Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The money will be used to help an estimated 37,500 people, by providing tents, emergency relief (food and medicine), water and sanitary facilities, psychological aid and an initial impetus to reconstruction.
