OCHA Situation Report No. 2
INDONESIA - Flash Floods and Landslides in South Sulawesi Province

This report is based on information received from the UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator's Office in Jakarta.

SITUATION

1. The Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) South Sulawesi reported that while the torrential rains have ceased and floodwaters have receded significantly, several sub-districts in Sinjai District are still inundated with water ranging from between one to two meters in height. Singjai Tengah sub-district is still inaccessible. Repairs to electricity supply are underway and electricity has been restored in some areas. Water pipelines were badly damaged particularly in Sinjai District.

2. Limited road access (caused by damaged roads, houses, and bridges) hampers the search for survivors. The local government, supported by PMI/IFRC and volunteers, the military and police, continue to search for the missing, with their focus on rivers and riverbanks as well as coastal areas.

3. SATKORLAK PB reported the following (22 June, 14:00 hours): dead persons 200, missing persons 135

4. According to SATKORLAK PB there are a total of 7,500 displaced persons throughout the affected districts (3,000 people in Sinjai District, 3,000 in Bulukumba District, and 1,500 in Bantaeng District).

5. According to data provided by PMI/IFRC South Sulawesi, there are 209 dead, 71 missing, eight seriously injured and 20 slightly injured.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

6. The Deputy for National Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB) will visit the affected areas together with officials from the Ministries of Health and Social Affairs to monitor the emergency response and hand over relief assistance.

7. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has deployed SATGANA (Field Action Team) from PMI branches to carry out an assessment and facilitate the evacuation process in all the affected areas together with the local government. There are reports that floodwaters have started to subside in several areas including the Sinjai District. PMI South Sulawesi also mobilized 13 volunteers to assist the emergency response initiatives and established a field kitchen for at least 200 displaced persons.

8. The Ministry of Social Affairs will dispatch 100 tons rice, 2,000 boxes instant noodles, 10,000 sarongs, 10,000 blankets. The Ministry has already prepared six evacuation kits consisting of tents, rubber boats, life vests, generators, and field kitchen equipment.

9. The Ministry of Health has opened health posts at provincial and district levels for affected people, revitalized community health centers, distributed medical supplies and equipment and deployed surveillance team for emergency sanitation in the affected areas.
