Sudan's first VP rules out renewed war in south

KHARTOUM, Feb 4 (KUNA) -- Sudanese First Vice President Salva Kiir Mayardit here Sunday ruled out renewed war in south Sudan, and initiated a fresh initiative for peace in the troubled region of Darfur.

Mayardit was speaking at the first congress of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM), which he leads, said there could not be renewed war in south as the Popular National Congress (PNC) and the SPLM had already reached a peace agreement.

He continued "In spite of obstacles facing the implementation of the total peace agreement, no party is willing to return to war once more. We have turned from the gunfight conflict stage into the stage of competition through programs and works." Mayardit emphasized that his movement believes in Sudan's volitional, rather than compulsory, unity, opining that "unity is better than separation as far as public interest is concerned." He called on all Sudanese political forces to work together to find a way out of the Sudanese crisis by means of implementing the comprehensive peace deal between south and north Sudan.

Concerning his peace initiative, he said it focused on all-out interest among the region's tribes, urging tribal leaders and Darfur dignitaries to step up efforts to make his initiative successful. (end) hh.
