Ramallah_(dpa) _ UN Emergency Relief
Coordinator Jan Egeland said Tuesday that the United Nations needs 250
million dollars immediately to keep offering services and humanitarian
needs in the Palestinian territories.
"The world is not interested to
see the suffering of the Palestinian people continuing amid fire as Israel
keeps destroying houses, bridges and power stations in Gaza Strip,"
Egeland told a news conference in Ramallah.
Egeland's news conference followed a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Egeland said that there is a "real humanitarian catastrophe" in the Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip, which lacks water and electricity.
Last month, Israeli jets destroyed the only power plant in Gaza as part of an ongoing offensive following the capture of an Israeli soldier by militants. The offensive included closure of all border crossings.
Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said that UN envoys and the accompanying delegation "have witnessed the great destruction and the humanitarian conditions in Gaza Strip."
The Palestinian Authority has told the envoys that they must issue an emergency call to secure the basic needs of the Palestinian people, Erekat said.
