Media advisory: Jan Egeland heads to Sudan

(New York, 3 March 2005): Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland is scheduled to arrive in Sudan today for a five-day visit. He will meet with authorities, representatives of the African Union, conflict-affected populations, displaced persons, donors, and aid workers.
On 4 March, Mr. Egeland will go to South Sudan where, in addition to meeting with members of the SPLM, UN agencies, and NGO partners at work in Rumbek, he will visit Malualkon in Northern Bahr el Ghazal - an area through which tens of thousands of IDPs have returned in 2004. With the peace in place, hundreds of thousands of people displaced during the war are poised to return to communities where few of the resources required to support IDP returns are in place. Such a lack of resources could result in returning IDPs and refugees finding nothing to assist their resettlement, and possibly undermine efforts to bring a lasting peace to Sudan.

The Under-Secretary-General will travel next to various locations in South Darfur, where he will meet with authorities, aid workers, and representatives of the African Union. He will also hold independent discussions with civilians.
