Ref: OCHA/GVA - 2006/0119
OCHA Situation Report No. 1
Pakistan -Mudslide
This situation report is based on the information received from the Integrated United Nations Resident Coordinator's / Humanitarian Coordinator's Office in Islamabad.

Situation

1. A mudslide incurred by monsoon rains left 22 people dead, five seriously injured and seven still missing in a village called Ghaeel in Kalam valley, north of Peshawar, on 3 July. Mud and boulders buried three houses in the village where approximately 30 people are believed to be living. A heavy rain swollen canal in the area caused the mud and rocks to fall on the houses.

2. In the absence of required machinery, rescue workers, including residents have been mobilized to clear the rubble with bare hands. Three children were reportedly rescued alive. However, the seven still missing were reported dead.

Kalam valley is not part of the South Asia earthquake affected zone.

3. At this stage, the local government is managing the situation and the UN will step in to provide necessary support if further warranted by the situation.

National Response

4. The National Government has directed the local administration to immediately start relief activities and assess the damage in the affected area. The Chief Minister of NWFP province announced that PKR 100,000 (approximately USD 1,676) each for the deceased and PKR 50,000 (approximately USD 838) for the injured would be provided. He also directed health officials to facilitate the medical treatment for the injured and provide them free of cost medicines and other facilities.

5. OCHA is in close contact with the UN Resident Coordinator's Office as well as with the Government of Pakistan, and will revert with further information, as it becomes available. This situation report, together with further information on ongoing emergencies, is also available on the OCHA Internet Website at http://www.reliefweb.int.
