OCHA Situation Report No.1
Indonesia - Padang Landslides
This report is elaborated by the OCHA Office in Jakarta and based on information provided by the Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster and IDPs/Refugees of West Sumatra (SATKORLAK PBP), District Executing Unit for the Management of Disaster and IDPs/Refugees of Padang (SATLAK PBP), Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and media reports.

Situation

1. Landslides, caused by days of torrential rains, hit Bukit Gaung in Lubuk Bagalung Sub-District of Padang Municipality, West Sumatra, on 2 September at 01:30 local time.

2. According to SATLAK PBP Padang, as of 4 September, 16 people were found buried and dead, nine others were reported missing, and at least 10 people were injured. The landslides have completely destroyed eight houses and heavily damaged eight others.

3. Due to fear of further landslides, local authorities have instructed the evacuation of 44 households (approximately 220 persons) who lived in the surrounding affected areas. These people preferred to move in with their families and neighbours in safer areas instead of living in the temporary tents built by the local authorities, together with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

National Response

4. The Provincial (SATKORLAK PBP) and District (SATLAK PBP) Government have provided some basic emergency relief, such as food, drinking water and medical supplies for victims of the landslides. As confirmed by SATKORLAK PBP on 4 September, local authorities have adequate capacities in responding to this disaster.

5. The local Search and Rescue team from Padang, together with the Indonesian Military (TNI), the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), as well as some community volunteers have continued to search for the missing victims since 2 September.

6. According to PMI, some volunteers from PMI-West Sumatra Chapter have been deployed to the affected areas and are providing assistance, such as body bags, tents, and a public kitchen.
