Swedish election experts to Afghanistan

Ministry for Foreign Affairs
The Government has decided to send four election observers, three long-term observers and one short-term observer to Afghanistan for the parliamentary and provincial elections on 18 September.

"By sending election observers Sweden can help to strengthen the democratic development that picked up speed with the presidential election in the autumn of 2004. The enthusiasm shown by voters in the presidential election was good to see and clearly demonstrates the will of the Afghan people to build up a sustainable democratic system," says Minister for International Development Cooperation Carin Jämtin.

This decision has been taken following a request from the European Commission to EU Member States to make a small team of election observers available.
