The International Compact on Timor-Leste will be a key tool to addressing the priorities emerging from the crisis

"The International Compact on Timor-Leste will be a key tool to addressing the priorities emerging from the crisis," Said Acting Prime Minister, Estanislau Aleixo da Silva.

Acting Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, His Excellency Mr. Estanislau Aleixo da Silva, today hailed the Compact consultation meetings with civil society, political parties, and private sector, as critical steps forward in the Government's consultation with all sectors of Timorese society on the international compact process.

Estanislau da Silva stated that the international Compact is an agreement between the international community and the Government of Timor-Leste which brings together all relevant actors involved in addressing the complex array of problems that contributed to last year's crisis.

"Areas of special focus will include national reconciliation and social trauma, public safety and security sector reform, humanitarian assistance, justice, and the rule of law, and communication with civil society, youth employment, and human resource development," stated the acting Prime Minister.

"The key theme to the Compact is "Recovery". The purpose of the Compact is to ensure a shared commitment and coordinated efforts between the Timorese leadership institutions with the international community around a common recovery framework

"Today's meetings are not only to inform about the Compact process and the proposed priorities, but also to seek the valuable input and feedback from various sectors of our society on this process," added Acting Prime Minister.

Estanislau da Silva further explained that "The Compact intends to link with and build on existing forums, and to maximize where possible, existing coordination and implementation mechanisms. There will be linkages to other existing mechanism and continuous consultation and dialogue among all stakeholders throughout this whole process.

"As a follow up to today's meetings, we will be holding a series of workshops from 24 - 28 May to further define the Compact, and identify key benchmarks for the Compact priority areas and ways for their implementation.

The meetings today were held in the Ministry of Planning and Finance's conference room, and attended by a number of organizations and associations in Timor-Leste including Non Government Organizations, the Church and other religious groups, Academics, the private sector and political party representatives.
