Philippines: Mayon Volcano Bulletin - 24 Aug 2006

Lava extrusion from the summit crater of Mayon Volcano (13.2576=B0N, 123.6856=B0E) appeared more vigorous last night. The renewed lava outpouring and associated rockfalls showed that Mayon's mild eruptive activity in general is continuing. Instrumental observations bear out this active status with 451 identified tremor episodes and eighteen (18) volcanic earthquakes. The Lignon Hill Observatory in Legazpi City reported near-continuous streaming of lavas which deposited onto the southeast slopes. A large volume of incandescent material was spread within the confines of the Bonga gully although it is anticipated that due to progressive deposition, subsequent lava flows and fragments will be diverted to either side, in the general directions toward Miisi and Buyoan.
The renewed outflow of lava observed last night followed the high emission rates of Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) which amounted to 6,238 tonnes per day (t/d). Voluminous gray and white volcanic plumes were seen drifting northeast this morning.

In general, Mayon remains in an unstable and active condition. This is clearly evident with the past weeks' sustained activity and last night's intensified lava extrusion, PHIVOLCS therefore reiterates Alert Level 4, to indicate a very high probability of an explosive, hazardous eruption. The public is therefore advised to strictly observe the off-limits declaration for all existing danger zones.
