Serbia: Foundation stone laid for construction of housing facilities for refugees in Nis

Nis, Aug 9, 2006 - Serbian Minister of Capital Investments Velimir Ilic laid the foundation stone today in Pasi Poljana near Nis for the construction of 45 flats for refugees and internally displaced persons within the framework of the Settlement and Integration of Refugees Programme being implemented by the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN Habitat).

The Italian government provided €1.2 million for the construction of 75 flats in Nis, while land, infrastructure, project documentation and the building permit was provided by the City of Nis to cover 30% of the cost of the entire project.

The ceremony of laying the foundation stone was attended by Mayor of the City of Nis Smiljko Kostic, head of the UN Habitat office in Serbia Ligia Ramirez and representatives of the Italian embassy in Belgrade.
