Pakistan: Policy announced for reconstruction of educational institutions in quake-hit-areas

PESHAWAR, June 18 (APP): The provincial government has announced a policy "Construct, Return and Better Life," for earthquake-hit- areas of NWFP according to which 2766 educational institutions including primary, middle and high schools, colleges, technical institutes and a university would be rebuild.
According to the NWFP's budget document, the government has allocated Rs.15.337 billion to reconstruct buildings of educational institutions following the worst catastrophe that hit the north-eastern districts of NWFP and Azad Kashmir in October 8 last year.

According to the new policy, about 690 educational institutions will be reconstructed and remodel in the fiscal year 2006-07, 1038 in 2007-08 and 1038 in 2008-09.

An agreement with the Japanese funded project named JICA has been signed according to which reconstruction of all the educational institutions in district Battagram will be completed in two years.

Meanwhile, according to preliminary estimate of the Works and Services department, Rs.6.75 billion will be required to repair and rebuild 3031 kilometers long roads in the quake-hit-areas of NWFP.

The Asian Development Bank (ADP) had shown willingness to provide Rs.2.651 billion for reconstruction of 1235 kilometers roads in Manshera, Battagram, Balakot, Alai and other quake hit areas during next three years time, according to budget document.

Similarly the provincial government has planned to complete 1557 irrigation schemes in next three years, adding, 622 irrigation schemes will be completed in 2006-07, 798 in 2007-08 while in 2008-09 a total of 137 will be made on ground with an estimated cost of Rs.1.34 billion.
