India: Situation report - Deep depression/flood, 09 Jul 2007

South West Monsoon

Heavy rainfall reported during the last 24 hrs, over Gangetic West Bengal, South Orissa, Bihar, East Madhya Pradesh, South-East Rajasthan and east Uttar Pradesh has affected northern parts of Orissa and Central-West Rajasthan states. As per today's IMD forecast the report states that the depression formed yesterday over East Madhya Pradesh has weakened into a low pressure area and moved northwestwards. Possibly it may re-intensify into a depression of dense clouds over north-west Madhya Pradesh. Under its influence, widespread heavy rainfalls will occur over southeast Rajasthan and Gujarat during next 36 hrs and also over West Madhya Pradesh, Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, northeast & southwest Rajasthan during the same period. Wave height of 0.5.to 2.5 meters would be experienced along the west coast and along the east coast the wave height would be of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. The visibility will be poor along the west coast and north-eastern coastal area.

AFFECTED STATES:

Rajasthan - Due to heavy rainfall flash flood has been reported from Jodhpur, Nagpur, Sirohi, Barmer, and Pali districts. Western districts are partially affected. Transport movement on the national highway Jodhpur-Jaipur has been disrupted as certain sections of roads are submerged. The frequency of trains has been delayed. Jashwantsagar, Dam near Bilada has developed breaches along it embankments.

Orissa - In north Orissa, Subarnrekha river flowing in a rising spate has flooded about 25 villages of Balasore district Around 100,000 persons were discontented in Baliapal Block of Balasore district. Breaches have developed along embankments of rivers Baitarani, Subarnarekha and Budhabalanga. The district headquarters of Jajpur remains to be cut off. The affected districts include Balaore, Jaipur,Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundergarh.

West Bengal - North & South 24 Pargan, Kolkata, Howrah,Hooghly, Bardhaman, Birbhum, Bankura,Puruliya,Paschim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur districts and 73 blocks are affected. 33 deaths have been reported.

ADMINISTRATIVE MEASURES:

Rajasthan - In addition to rescuing 104 persons, 22 in Barmer, 43 in Pali districts and from Baytu and Balotra villages persons were rescued. The administration has air lifted food items.

Orissa - Helicopters are being mobilized from Army to rescue people and start air dropping of relief items. The state administration is monitoring the situation. ODRAF teams have been deployed in Balasore, Jaleswar and Bhograi Blocks to conduct relief and rescue operation.

West Bengal - The district administration has opened 361 relief camps to house 51141 persons and 32733 persons have been evacuated.

Gujarat - With situation slightly improving, people housed in relief camps are moving back to their houses, with 17 relief camps still functioning and accommodating 6480 persons.
