Indonesia: Dutch aid for victims of Sumatra earthquake

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the west coast of Sumatra on Tuesday 6 March, killing at least 82 people and injuring hundreds more. Minister for Development Cooperation Bert Koenders has informed the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hassan Wirajuda, that the Netherlands will be setting aside €1.5 million for the earthquake-ravaged island.

Half of the Dutch contribution will go to the Red Cross and half to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). These organisations will use the Dutch funds to purchase relief supplies, medicine, medical assistance and logistical support for the hundreds of Sumatran victims. Both organisations are experienced at conducting rapid, large-scale emergency aid operations in Indonesia.
