This report is developed by HC/RC Office in Indonesia based on information provided by the National Coordinating Board for the Management of Disaster (BAKORNAS PB), Provincial Coordinating Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATKORLAK PB) East Java, Executing Unit for the Management of Disaster (SATLAK) PB Trenggalek, Department of Health, Department of Social Affairs, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), UNICEF East Java, and media reports.

I. SITUATION

1. According to SATKORLAK PB East Java (21 Apr.), flash floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains in Trenggalek District, hit six subdistricts on Wednesday (19 Apr.) at around 01.00 a.m. hours local time with the height between 1.5 to 2 meters. These sub-districts include Tugu, Gandusari, Bendungan, Trenggalek, Pogalan, and Karangan. SATKORLAK PB reported that communication to the affected areas is difficult as the floods damaged telephone lines and cut electricity to many parts of the district.

2. SATLAK PB Trenggalek reported (20 Apr.) that the flash floods and landslides have killed 16 people (13 in Bendungan sub-district, two in Trenggalek sub-district, and one in Pogalan sub-district) and badly injured two others (in Trenggalek sub-district). Six people are reported missing (in Bendungan sub-district). More than 5 hectare paddy field were inundated and more than 5,000 livestock were missing.

3. A PMI team assessing some of the affected areas reported (21 Apr.) that 25 houses were swept away, 23 badly damaged, and 6,500 inundated. The floodwater has reportedly subsided in these areas. The infrastructure damages include health centers and market, access routes, irrigation system, a dam and four bridges. The worst affected area is Bendungan sub-district. PMI estimated the displaced people are around 48 families (around 240 persons).

II. NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. East Java Governor handed out aid (20 Apr.) in the form of instant noodles and medicines as well as cash amounting to Rp.100 million or Rp.2.5 million each to families of the victims.

5. BAKORNAS PB, led by the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, will visit the affected areas on Saturday (22 Apr.) to monitor the emergency response and hand over some relief assistance.

6. The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has deployed 45 SATGANA (Field Action Team) coming from Magelang, Madiun, Ponorogo, and Blitar. PMI has been supporting the evacuation process and providing health services, public kitchen, cleaning up the locations, and distributing relief items to the affected population.

III. INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

7. The UN RC/HC Office in Jakarta will continue to be in close contact with pertinent government and non-government institutions, as well as the Indonesian Red Cross to monitor the situation.
