  • A flooding river fed by torrential rains has left 480 families homeless in the Angolan town of Dondo, North Cuanza province, local media reported Wednesday.

The report quoted the governor of province, Miguel Caxino, as saying that the overflowing Capacala River destroyed 82 houses late last week and threatened to sweep away 120 others in two outlying neighborhoods of Dondo, located some 160 km southeast of Luanda.

One person was killed and the town's water treatment station was in danger of collapse, the report said.

Caxino said that the authorities planned to supply victims with tents and to build dikes to contain the river, a tributary of the Cuanza. He added that the flooding is the worst in the area since 1989.
