Lebanon Crisis: Health Cluster Bulletin No. 36, 05 Dec 2007

The Lebanon Crisis Health Cluster Bulletin aims to give an overview of the health activities conducted by the health cluster partners in relation to the latest Lebanon conflict as well as the crisis in the Palestinian camps. It compiles health information received from the different organizations working in the most affected areas.

The Health Cluster Bulletin will be issued every other Wednesday.

Highlights

- A Hepatitis A outbreak was detected in a public school in Hasbaya district.

- Landmines/UXOs/cluster bombs continue to cause casualties.

- The situation in Lebanon is pending the presidential elections expected on Friday 7 December 2007.

- WHO hub in Tyr is phasing out.

Nahr El-Bared Crisis

- United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and its partners continue their efforts to restore life at Naher El Bared Camp.

Situation Overview

- Seventeen cases of Hepatitis A from Ain Qania-Hasbaya district were reported by the Ministry of Education and confirmed by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit at the Ministry of Health. The monthly incidence rate of Hepatitis A has increased from 4.6/100,000 in July to 54.7/100,000 in November. Water from both village fountains was found contaminated and 40% of the population of Ain Qania have no access to the water network. Awareness campaigns were launched by the health authorities.

- According to the Lebanese Mine Action Center (LMAC) report, the total number of casualties reached 282 as of November 30. Until November 1, approximately 25 Million of the 38,310,841 square meters contaminated were cleared.

Nahr El-Bared Crisis

- According to UNRWA, around 1,200 Internally Displaced Refugees (IDRs) families have returned to Nahr El-Bared camp and are receiving UNRWA and its partners' assistance. The homecoming of other IDRs is pending the establishment of new shelters.
