Emergency in Burma (Myanmar): TSF Asia still on standby

A TSF team is actually on stand-by and ready to deploy to Burma following the deadly path of category 3 cyclone Nargis. Initial reports announce 22 000 death and 41 000 go missing, particularly in the regions of Irrawaddy and Rangon.

Coming from the Bengal Gulf, the cyclone made landfall late Friday night on the Southern West cost, with winds reaching 240 km/h. Nargis followed its past toward East, causing intensive damages in Rangon, the major city of country.

Electricity and communications have been cut off and the military based government declared the state of emergency in 5 regions: Rangon, Irrawaddy, Pegu, Mon and Karen states.

International organizations are mobilizing to support the victims; TSF and its regional office in Bangkok are closely monitoring the situation, ready to deploy as soon as the government requests for International support.
