Timor-Leste: Humanitarian update 14 - 27 Jun 2008

The Humanitarian Update (HU) aims at providing a periodic analysis of current humanitarian issues, facts and policy developments in Timor-Leste with primary attention given to internally displaced people. The HU is based on voluntary information inputs from UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, NGO members of the Humanitarian Coordination Committee and other partners. It analyses information from a variety of sector coordination meetings involving Timorese authorities. The HU is coordinated and issued by OCHA/UNMIT Integrated Humanitarian Coordination Team (IHCT), usually on a fortnightly basis. OF NOTE

- Movement out of IDP camps in Dili: Movement out of Sional Camp began on 17 June whilst movement out of Arte Moris continued. Movement out of UNITAL and Qarantina Transitional Shelters is expected to begin on Monday 30 June.

- International Year of Sanitation: The Ministry of Health, with the support of UNICEF and the WWG, has launched the International Year of Sanitation (IYS) on 20 June. The celebrations included an exhibit in Dili where improved latrines were on display, and a Parade.

- Jackie Chan's visit to Timor-Leste: From 24 to 26 June, Hong Kong Action film star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jackie Chan visited Timor-Leste. Mr. Chan met with young people from across the country, including leaders of the martial arts groups, to listen to their concerns and hopes for the future. He delivered a message of discipline, respect and unity to promote the peaceful yet powerful role that young people engaging in martial arts can play. He also participated in a performance by hundreds of members of Dili - based popular martial arts groups at Dili National Stadium on 25 June.
