April 26, 2001 will mark 15 years of the aftermath of the Chornobyl disaster. Limitation of the consequences of this accident is still a major concern for Belarus, Russian Federation , Ukraine and the world at large. For this reason, the International Conference "Fifteen Years after the Chornobyl Accident. Lessons Learned" will be held in Kyiv, Ukraine on April 18-20, 2001, to create a platform for the exchange of knowledge acquired from this disaster with regard to increased safety, effective solutions to overcoming its consequences and decreasing the risk of possible radiological disasters in the future.

The main aims of the Conference.

The world community of scientists and experts, representatives of Belarus, Russian Federation and the Ukraine and inter-governmental organizations will meet to discuss the environmental, medical and social consequences of the Chernobyl accident, the effectiveness of countermeasures that have been implemented and future projects. Decommissioning of ChNPP and issues related to the "Shelter will be discussed also.

The main aims of the conference are:

For the scientific community in the most affected countries to develop a common vision with the remaining international scientific community with regard to the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster (in ecological, medical, social and other areas 15 years post-Chornobyl).

To draw conclusions and provide recommendations to allow decision makers at both national and international level to take further steps to mitigate the effects of the disaster.

For the results of the Conference to represent a common international understanding of the current situation resulting from the accident and the future initiatives which will be necessary to counter its effects.

Place and date of the Conference

The Conference will take place in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv on April 18-20, 2001 in the Ukrainian House, Kreshchatik Str., 2.

April 21 the visit to Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and NPP will be organized.

Structure of the Conference

The Conference will open with a plenary meeting with statements from governments from the most affected countries: Ukraine, Belarus, Russia. It is expected that statement from Ukraine will present by President Leonid Kuchma. These will be followed by statements from inter-governmental and international agencies: the United Nations Organization, European Commission, IAEA, and Council of Europe. National and international reports will then be presented.

After lunch, the plenary meeting will continue with invited papers on the main directions of the Conference, which will be presented by the international teams of experts.

April 19, 2001 the Conference will continue with technical sessions:

1. Decommissioning of ChNPP and issues related to the "Shelter".
2. Environmental consequences of the accident.
3. Medical consequences of the accident.
4. Social and economic consequences of the accident and related issues.

April 20, 2001 the presentation of the invited papers will continue in the form of a plenary meeting. This will be followed by reports from the session Chairmen who will present the main results of the different sessions activity and draft of conference conclusion on appropriate direction will be discussed. At the end of the conference the Conference conclusion, prepared by the Programme Committee, will then be presented.

The Conference will conclude with a press conference.

Reports to the Conference.

434 abstracts have been submitted to the conference. The Program Committee till February 6, 2001 will inform the authors about oral or poster presentation on the technical sessions are propose.

The international teams of experts for preparation of invited reports on the most important subjects are created. The conclusions of the invited report will be first step on integrated of the different vision on the most significant direction Chernobyl consequences minimisation.
