South Sudan: IOM Wau Situation Report 2 | 28 June 2016

Attachments

Security incidents in Wau County escalated on 24 June with serious fighting in the town and significant displacement of people from their homes and communities. Local media reported a large number of casualties and extensive looting of property. On 25 June, the President relieved the Wau Governor of his position. The Government is believed to be organising a robust security response which will lead to continued fighting in the region and displace more civilians. Following last week’s violence in Raja there are growing concerns about stability across the Western Bahr e Ghazal region. With worsening security to the south in Wau, IOM Sudan is tracking displaced civilians at the Sudan border through the DTM system.

After negotiations, humanitarians are responding to approximately 26,000 people in areas that have been assessed and are accessible. By the UNMISS base, UNMISS has created a security cordon with peacekeepers patrolling. The IOM surge team, including the Head of Operations, Senior WASH Program Officer and medical staff arrived on June 26 along with humanitarian supplies.
