LAKE TANGANYIKA REGION
35 miles (50 km) SSW of Kipili, Tanzania
The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 30 miles (50 km) south-southwest of Kipili, Tanzania or 160 miles (260 km) south-southeast of Kalemie, Democratic Republic of Congo. at 8:25 PM MDT, Oct 1, 2000 (Oct 02 at 4:25 AM local time in Dem Republic Congo). A PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE OF 6.6 WAS COMPUTED FOR THIS EARTHQUAKE. The magnitude and location may change slightly as additional data are received from other seismograph stations. The most recent earthquake of comparable size was a magnitude 6.2 event on September 21, 1997. This is the largest earthquake in this general area since a magnitude 7.3 on December 13, 1910. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.
NB: The region name comes from the seismic and geographic regionalization of Flinn, Engdahl, and Hill (1974), with occasional name changes which have been given in various issues of the PDE Monthly Listing. The boundaries of these regions are defined at one degree intervals and differ slightly from irregular political boundaries. The region name is automatically generated and can be misleading for earthquakes near region boundaries.
