Job Opportunities

Q: How can I find information about jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities in humanitarian organizations?

A: We suggest that you take a look at ReliefWeb's Humanitarian Vacancies section. In addition to the latest vacancy announcements by humanitarian organizations, you will find a list of links to various organizations. Please contact them directly to inquire about job and volunteer opportunities.

You may want to consider United Nations Volunteers (UNV). You will find many interesting volunteer openings at their site. You can also find a list of US-based NGOs (non-governmental organizations) at Interaction. Other good sources for job and volunteer opportunities are OneWorld Online, Action Without Borders, the UK-based British Overseas NGOs for Development (BOND) and Balkan Sun Flowers.

For information on internships with the UN, see:

Donations

Q: How can I donate money, food, clothes etc. to victims of natural disasters and emergencies?

A: We suggest that you contact humanitarian NGOs (non-governmental organizations) directly to find out if they are appealing for specific donations. You will find a list of NGOs in the Directory of Humanitarian Organizations. You can also look at the page of the disaster or emergency for which you are interested in giving a donation. Use “By Format” view to find a link to appeals and contributions raised by the international humanitarian community.

Q: I’ve received an email with a link to “The Hunger Site”. Supposedly you can donate a portion of food just by entering the site. How does this work?

A: The Hunger Site is an independent website created to alleviate hunger. Visitors to the site are invited to donate a serving of food by clicking on a button. The donations are paid for by corporate sponsors.

ReliefWeb has received assurances from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) that The Hunger Site is giving all of the donations it generates via the internet to WFP. Cash donations equivalent to millions of servings of food have been donated since the site opened in June 1999.

WFP is using donations from The Hunger Site to provide food to mothers and children in the developing world, as part of its efforts to end hunger. For more information about WFP, click here.

Emergency Updates

Q: Is it possible to receive information directly by email immediately after a crisis happens somewhere in the world, without having to visit ReliefWeb?

A: You can subscribe to the ReliefWeb Bulletin, a mailing list used to alert subscribers to new natural disasters. Typically, the first OCHA (Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) situation report will be sent. The Bulletin list is also used to disseminate other major announcements concerning the humanitarian community. Subscribers can expect one to two email messages per week.

You can also subscribe to updated OCHA situation reports on complex emergencies and natural disasters.

To subscribe to the bulletin or to OCHA situation reports, click here.

Q: How often is ReliefWeb updated?

A: ReliefWeb is updated from our New York and Geneva offices every half-hour, from 0800 to 2400 GMT. We plan to open an Asian office in 2000 to allow ReliefWeb to provide time-critical updates 24 hours a day.

Q: For natural disasters, do you only post information relating to developing countries?

A: The ReliefWeb mandate is to post reports and documents only from disasters in countries whose governments request external humanitarian assistance, to which the UN responds. This is why you will not find information on our site on certain disasters.
